That seems to be changing as more women in Kochi, considered the most happening of Kerala’s cities, have acquired a taste for alcohol like their big metro counterparts.
According to Alcohol and Drug Information Centre-India (ADIC-India), there are about 3.5 crore women drinkers in India, which is three per cent of the Indian population.
ADIC-India does not have figures about women drinkers in Kerala, as current studies are confined to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai.
But reports and data collected from hospitals and other research centres in the state, seem to indicate that the number of Kerala women drinkers has risen and ADIC-India this week has decided to include Kerala in its statistics for women drinkers to get an accurate picture.
